Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards saw comedian Russell Brand poking fun at the squeaky-clean Jonas Brothers for their frequently mocked promise rings (chastity rings). Jordin Sparks rushed to their defense, saying, "I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a ####."
Although Brand offered an apology for his promise ring comments, he quickly spun the apology into a series of dirty jokes, saying, "Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody."
The promise rings symbolize each individual’s desire to abstain from sex until after marriage. Celebrity chastity rings certainly aren’t new. Just a few years back, Joe Simpson was in the news for giving them to his daughters Jessica and Ashlee.
