# Soft Bookworm Storage The Silicone Catalyst Shelf Has a Built-In Bookmark By Matt Ho | Published 2011-01-23 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/catalyst-shelf References: [mocoloco](http://mocoloco.com/fresh2/2011/01/20/catalyst-shelf-by-jiyoung-seo.php) & [jiyoungseo.tumblr](http://jiyoungseo.tumblr.com/) I’ve seen simple shelves before, but I’ve never seen one that’s as small and basic as the Catalyst Shelf. Korean designer Jiyoung Seo defines [minimalism](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balolo-setup-cockpit) with the Catalyst Shelf. It’s a [small silicone bar-shaped storage space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sfso-1) that holds small items and no more than [two books at a time](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/firm-book-end). The flap on the top lets you use it as a bookmark for what you’re reading. It may not build a library, but there’s something wonderful about the Catalyst Shelf’s simplicity that everyone can enjoy. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 53% | Activity: 49% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Minimalist Storage Solutions:** Creating small, basic storage solutions that prioritize simplicity and functionality. - **Multi-functional Design:** Incorporating additional features or purposes into everyday objects, such as using a shelf as a bookmark. - **Small-scale Organization:** Developing storage solutions that are designed to hold a limited number of items in a compact way. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Design:** Designing and creating innovative, minimalist storage solutions for homes and offices. - **Book Publishing:** Exploring opportunities to incorporate multi-functional design elements into physical books to enhance the reading experience. - **Home Organization:** Developing products and solutions that cater to the need for small-scale organization in living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Compact Functional Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookmarker-table.md) - [Book-Shaped Transparent Bookmarks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/transparent-bookmark.md) - [Handle-Equipped Planter Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-plant-shelf.md) - [Tech-Charging Book Holders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/haaase-liesma-bookshelf.md) - [Book-Storing Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookgroove-bookrack.md) - [Versatile Book Displays](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/penguin-x-moebe-book-stand.md) - [Discreet Folding Shelf Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-shelf.md) - [Work-Life Balance Shelving Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/criteria-shelf.md)
