# Feline-Friendly Architecture These Outdoor Cat Shelter Designs Raised Money For the FixNation NGO By Rahul Kalvapalle | Published 2014-09-17 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cat-shelters References: [gizmag](http://www.gizmag.com/architects-for-animals-cat-shelters/33825/) & [fixnation.org](http://fixnation.org/) A selection of 14 Los Angeles-based architecture firms designed these functional, cute and downright bizarre [outdoor cat shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mew-cat-care-set). The shelters were displayed for one night only to raise money for FixNation, a charitable organization dedicated to minimizing cat populations through humane methods. The resulting shelters vary wildly in their shape, size and sheer practicality. HOK's shelter has a wooden roof and faux-grass, and may well become the standard for 21st century [communal cat housing](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cat-cafe-beds). Some of the cat shelters, such as Abramson Teiger Architects' entry, are rather luxurious and plush and suited towards high-maintenance felines. Others such as the 6Formation Association + Edgar Arceneaux entry would be well-suited towards the more hippie and environmentally conscious cat, as its slatted design allows for [passive cooling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-senior-shelter) and the shelter as a whole is low-impact. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.7/10 - Popularity: 96% | Activity: 97% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Pets](https://www.trendhunter.com/pets) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Cat Shelter Design:** There is a rising trend in designing functional and appealing outdoor cat shelters benefiting animal shelters. - **Community Cat Housing:** Community cat housing is the new 21st century standard for urban areas, creating opportunities to provide sustainable solutions for outdoor cats. - **Sustainable Cat Housing:** Green and environmentally conscious cat shelters are becoming an increasingly popular trend for outdoor cats. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** The architecture industry can revitalize public spaces while simultaneously incorporating outdoor cat shelters for animal shelters. - **Animal Welfare:** The animal welfare industry can benefit from the rise of functional and appealing outdoor cat shelters for community cats that can reduce cat populations without harming animals. - **Urban Planning:** Urban planning industry can incorporate cat housing into public space designs, providing appealing and practical solutions for the community of felines living there. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Feline-Focused Modern Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cat-tree-house-1.md) - [Cityscape-Like Cat Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mocats.md) - [Vertical Feline Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cat-tree-house-2.md) - [Sustainable Portable Cat Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/batsy-cat-shelter.md) - [Cat-Catered Large Japanese Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-cat-tree-house.md) - [Contemporary Cat Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/Cat-Furniture-1.md) - [Smart Cat Shelters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-pawswing-neo.md) - [Artful Doghouse Design Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/architecture-for-dogs-exhibition.md) - [Hybrid Feline-Friendly Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-cat-tower.md)
