# Safari Pencil Carvings Cindy Chinn Depicts Detailed Scenes of Animals in Her Wooden Sculptures By M | Published 2016-07-08 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carved-pencil References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/cindy-chinn-artist-microscopic-graphite-carvings-pencil-lead?utm_source=feedly&utm_medium=webfeeds) & [cindychinn](http://www.cindychinn.com/) Cindy Chinn is a detailed artist that works with small mediums to recreate scenes of animals in the wild using nothing more than a [carved pencil](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-pencils). The sculptures depict the wood of the pencil entirely etched away and the lead located in the centre transformed into scenes such as animals in the safari. The detail is incredibly precise, despite the small scale that Chinn is working from. Chinn is able to achieve such realism and detail in her carvings by using Exacto blades that are incredibly thin and sharp. This allows the artist to achieve carvings that are small than a quarter of an inch and take hours to make. This one in particular features a [herd of three dimensional elephants](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anima) crossing a plain with several trees in the background. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 64% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Microscopic Carvings:** Artists exploring the use of carving to create detailed scenes on smaller-than-average mediums. - **Innovative Tools:** Companies designing new tools to improve the precision and ease of carving on smaller mediums. - **Hyperrealistic Art:** Artists pushing the limits of realism in their works, using unconventional mediums and techniques. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art Supplies:** Art supply companies can develop new tools and supplies specific to small scale carving techniques. - **Fine Art:** Fine art galleries can showcase microcarving as an innovative art form and feature artists who specialize in this technique. - **Museums:** Museums can create exhibits showcasing hyperrealistic art in unconventional mediums and techniques. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Biology-Inspired Porcelain Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shiyuan-xu.md) - [Almost-Extinct Animal Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fauna-series.md) - [Geometric Wooden Art Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aleph-geddis.md) - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Insect-Inspired Bronze Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/insect-bronze-sculptures.md) - [Beeswax Sculptural Candles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/greentree.md) - [Intricate Resin Hand-Painted Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/snh003.md) - [Sculptural Writing Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-pencils.md)
