# Adaptable Matchbox Tables Cargo Coffee Table Transforms to Meet Surface, Storage and Spatial Needs By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-07-27 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cargo-coffee-table References: [muuuz](http://muuuz.com/magazine/rubriques/design/44643-frédéric-saulou-cargo) & [fredericsaulou](http://www.fredericsaulou.com/index.php?/projects/via/) Ideally, a piece of furniture should be as flexible as the space in which it sits. The Cargo Coffee Table was conceived as a clever solution that's capable of adjusting to fit a variety of different rooms and a range of requirements in [adaptable areas of the home](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/turno). Frederic Saulou's object is [a long aluminum box](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twist-side-table), powder-coated in a minimal white and lacking several sections of its six faces. The rectangular openings reveal a red container fit snugly inside of it with a continuous top and a square gap in its side. Complete with a handle, this compartment can be slid straight out like a giant drawer, lengthening the size of the Cargo Coffee Table and producing [storage space](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harbor-051). It can also expand width-wise if the internal case is swiveled laterally. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.5/10 - Popularity: 72% | Activity: 56% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Adaptable Furniture:** Opportunity to create more multi-functional and flexible furniture pieces to meet the varied spatial requirements of living spaces. - **Modular Design:** Incorporating modular design with removable or adjustable parts to create customizable furniture solutions that can adapt to changing needs over time. - **Space-saving Furniture:** Designing furniture that can transform or be easily stored away to create more space in smaller living areas or shared living spaces. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Furniture Industry:** Creating more versatile, adaptive and customizable furniture options to cater to the evolving spatial requirements of consumers. - **Interior Design Industry:** Integrating more adaptable and space-saving furniture solutions into interior design plans to maximize the use of smaller living areas or shared living spaces. - **Architecture Industry:** Incorporating more modular and adaptable furniture solutions into architectural designs to meet the changing spatial requirements of modern living spaces. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Adaptive Furniture Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expand-furniture.md) - [Bookshelf-Incorporated Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/overlap-table.md) - [Spinning Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diy-spinning-coffee-table.md) - [Minimalist Book Storage Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pocket-coffee-table.md) - [Multifuntional Modular Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-transformer-table.md) - [Multifunctional Living Room Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aliving-coffee-table.md) - [Industrial Shapeshifting Table Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jointable.md) - [Perplexingly Angular Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tadashi-side-table.md) - [Dynamic Sculptural Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-transformation-table.md)
