# Disease-Detecting Breathalyzers This Tester Measures One's Breath to to Uncover Illnesses By Adrian Dunevein | Published 2017-05-08 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/breath-disease-tester References: [trends.medicalexpo](http://trends.medicalexpo.com/project-417766.html) & [owlstonemedical](https://www.owlstonemedical.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwi7vIBRDpo9W8y7Ct6ZcBEiQA1CwV2BGVr3DcQJQKDimWqXb7GIdPqVsSoeyiysmrsu6Ge9waAvGD8P8HAQ) It is well known that a dog's nose is so sensitive they can be trained to detect disease just from smell. Now, a British company called Owlstone Medical has built an IC chip that duplicates that offers the same functions with electronics. The implications for this new technology are enormous. Now, a simple [breathalyzer-type device](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rapid-diagnosis-tool) can be used to screen patients for what are known as "[disease biomarkers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/health-acoustic-representations)."Biomarkers are signs that might indicate you have pneumonia, rheumatoid arthritis or even a whole host other problems including cancer. Knowing this in advance just by testing your breath could lead to diseases being detected way before they become incurable. In the future, a trip to the health clinic might include a breath sample, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of one's health. The devices could potentially even become small enough, and inexpensive enough, that you could do the test in your own home. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 6% | Activity: 18% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Health](https://www.trendhunter.com/health) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Disease-detecting Breathalyzers:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Developing portable and affordable breathalyzer devices for at-home health screenings. - **Disease Biomarker Screening:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Creating advanced algorithms and AI systems to analyze breath samples for the detection of various diseases. - **Personalized Healthcare Monitoring:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Designing wearable breathalyzer devices that continuously monitor individuals' health and provide real-time alerts for potential diseases. ### Where This Applies - **Medical Devices:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Developing and manufacturing cutting-edge breathalyzer technologies for medical professionals and at-home use. - **Biotechnology:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Exploring new methods of identifying and analyzing disease biomarkers in breath samples for improved diagnostic and treatment options. - **Healthcare Services:** Disruptive Innovation Opportunity: Integrating breathalyzer technology into routine health check-ups and telemedicine services to enable efficient disease screening and prevention. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Virus-Detecting Breathalyzers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/virusdetecting-breathalyzer.md) - [Noninvasive Breathing Trackers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/home-breath-analysis.md) - [Wearer-Analyzing Respirators](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ebcare-mask.md) - [Portable Methanol Analytical Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/analytical-device.md) - [Workplace-Focused Alcohol Breathalyzers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alcohol-breathalyzers.md) - [Neurodegenerative Disease-Detecting Earbuds](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hightech-earbuds.md) - [Connected Runner Breath Analyzers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wearable-breath-analyzer.md) - [Smart Health-Monitoring Mouthpieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mouthio.md) - [Breath-Tracking Face Mask Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/facebit.md)
