# Impaled Architecture Pacific Environments' Bourke House was Inspired by Tents and Pavilions By Meghan Young | Published 2011-03-31 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bourke-house References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2011/03/29/the-bourke-house-by-pacific-environments/) & [pacificenvironments.co.nz](http://www.pacificenvironments.co.nz/) Looking at the Bourke House, you'll find yourself intrigued by the poles impaling its roof. A unique and fascinating accent, it was actually inspired by its campsite location. It draws on traditional [tent and pavilion designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/casa-solai) in which pikes and poles were often generously used. Designed by [Pacific Environments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pacific-house), the Bourke House is actually a [cottage home](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/haus-am-lagnesberg) that embodies the idea of long summer getaways. Its airy and open concept design leaves ample room for activities, memories and more. Aside from some quirky details, it's minimalist aesthetic makes it perfect for passing down generation after generation. A relaxing structure, the Bourke House is also eco-friendly. It relies on solar hot-water, rainwater-recycling and more to function. A happy retreat, the Bourke House is described with the term Aotearoa, "the land of the long white cloud." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 5.8/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 76% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Inspired Architecture:** Opportunities to create unique and captivating designs by drawing inspiration from unconventional sources like tents and pavilions. - **Minimalist Aesthetic:** Creating timeless and versatile designs that can be enjoyed for generations through simplicity and minimalism. - **Eco-friendly Living:** Developing sustainable and environmentally-friendly housing solutions with features like solar hot-water and rainwater recycling. ### Who This Affects Most - **Architecture:** Incorporating innovative and unconventional design elements into residential and commercial buildings. - **Interior Design:** Creating minimalist and timeless spaces that prioritize functionality and longevity. - **Sustainable Living:** Providing eco-friendly housing options that utilize renewable energy and waste management systems. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Angular Black Cantilevered Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tallowwood-cabin.md) - [Temple-Inspired Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/j-kidman-architecture.md) - [Living Landscape Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hedge-and-arbour-house.md) - [Open-Air Perforated Concrete Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/anchor-house.md) - [Clay Ridge Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birdwood-house.md) - [Contemporary Countryside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-countryside-home.md) - [Cutout Roof Cement-Clad Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edition-office.md) - [Bamboo Luxe Pool Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/godai-pavilion.md) - [Bushfire-Resistant Contemporary Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ironbark-house.md)
