# Considerate Waste Bins Copenhagen's Trash Can Shelves Help Bottle Collectors Feel Dignified By Laura McQuarrie | Published 2015-06-25 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bottle-collector References: [thelocal.dk](http://www.thelocal.dk/20150611/new-copenhagen-project-gives-bottle-collectors-dignity) & [sustainablog.org](http://sustainablog.org/2015/06/copenhagen-tests-the-trash-can-with-a-dignity-shelf-for-recyclables/) Knowing that there are bottle collectors who will dig through the trash to receive a monetary return for discarded cans and bottles, Copenhagen implemented a new [trash can design](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/trash-receptacles) that makes the act more dignified. The trash cans include a separate shelf for people to deposit unwanted bottles and cans, so that bottle collectors no longer have to find themselves arm-deep in a waste receptacle. As well as providing a simple way to help out a portion of the marginalized population in Copenhagen, this inventive can design also calls for more thoughtful waste sorting and [recycling from citizens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/comprehensive-recycling). Although these new cans are just being tested in the city, there may be plans in the future to bring these receptacles to other areas in Copenhagen with success. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.4/10 - Popularity: 62% | Activity: 32% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Dignified Waste Bins:** There is an opportunity to design more considerate waste bins that help marginalized populations, such as bottle collectors, feel dignified. - **Waste Sorting and Recycling:** The provision of thoughtful and distinctive designs for waste sorting and recycling demands a need for the industry to create similar solutions. - **Improved Waste Collecting Methods:** There is an emerging need for improved waste collecting methods to improve convenience and accessibility for users. ### Who This Affects Most - **Waste Management:** The waste management industry has an opportunity to create innovative designs that support the needs of various groups, such as bottle collectors. - **Urban Development:** Urban developers can incorporate considerate waste bins in their projects to improve the lives of marginalized groups and promote a more eco-friendly environment. - **Environmental Sustainability:** The introduction of innovative waste sorting and recycling solutions aligns with industry efforts to promote environmental sustainability and reduce waste. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Rodent-Preventative Trash Bins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/group-project.md) - [Sustainably Constructed Garbage Cans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/rubbish-bin.md) - [Customizable Garbage Cans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/totem-compact-unit.md) - [Chic Utilitarian Trash Cans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carden-the-twin.md) - [Modular Organization Garbage Bins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kitchen-garbage-bins.md) - [AI-Enabled Recycling Bins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smartsort.md) - [Tipping Trash Can Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/niko-trash-bin.md) - [AI-Powered Recycling Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/binko-recycling-machine.md) - [Adorable Public Rubbish Bins](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/design-seoul-20.md)
