# Cabinetlike Scullery Counters The Scandinavian-Inspired Bornholm Kitchen by Susan Serra By Meghan Young | Published 2011-03-20 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bornholm-kitchen References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/bornholm-kitchen/) & [bornholmkitchen](http://www.bornholmkitchen.com/) At first glance, the Bornholm Kitchen may look like another [traditional cabinet](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/obelisk-3) for your bedroom. It is, as the name suggests pretty strongly, not in fact another piece of furniture. Instead, it is a kitchen counter [fitted with a sink](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/luxury-kitchen-sink) and everything else you'd need. Designed by Susan Serra and her daughter Kelly Serra Donovan, the Bornholm Kitchen is inspired by the Scandinavian culture. This [freestanding counter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brio-kitchen-box) brings a warm, homey feeling that goes along well with one of its main design purposes: To encourage social interaction. Debuted during the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, the Bornholm Kitchen is available in either natural Walnut or Rift Oak and can be custom designed under the supervision of certified kitchen designers. I don't know why anyone would want to change anything about this great piece, though. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.6/10 - Popularity: 27% | Activity: 12% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Scandinavian-inspired Kitchen Design:** There is a growing trend towards incorporating Scandinavian design elements into kitchen design. - **Multi-functional Kitchen Spaces:** There is an increasing demand for kitchen spaces that can serve multiple functions beyond just cooking and food preparation. - **Freestanding Kitchen Counters:** Freestanding kitchen counters are becoming more prevalent as a way to encourage social interaction in the kitchen. ### Who This Affects Most - **Kitchen Design:** There is an opportunity for kitchen designers to incorporate Scandinavian design elements and multi-functional features into their designs. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** There is potential for furniture manufacturers to create freestanding kitchen counters that can be customized and integrated into kitchen spaces. - **Home Renovation:** There is a growing market for homeowners looking to renovate their kitchens to incorporate multi-functional, social spaces with unique design elements like freestanding counters. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Cabinet-Style Kitchen Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/next125-pocket-system.md) - [Convertible Under-Counter Fridges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/signature-kitchen-suite-mantle.md) - [Industrial Minimal Kitchen Units](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/column-kitchen.md) - [Minimalist Modular Kitchens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sensient-cosmetic-technologies.md) - [Compact Kitchen Furniture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/compact-kitchen-furniture.md) - [Freestanding Experimental Kitchens](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/experimental-kitchens.md) - [Reinventive Modern Kitchen Sinks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/luxury-kitchen.md) - [Earthy Kitchen Cabinet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/masterbrand-cabinets.md) - [Corner-Accommodating Water Purifiers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/builtin-water-purifier.md)
