# Bloodthirsty Timepieces The Fly Paper Clock Has a Taste for Bugs By Renee Ramsarran | Published 2011-02-13 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blood-thirsty-timepieces-the-fly-paper-clock-has-a-taste-for-bugs References: [neatorama](http://www.neatorama.com/2011/02/11/flypaper-clock-eats-flies-uses-their-bodies-for-energy/) & [materialbeliefs](http://www.materialbeliefs.com/prototypes/cder.php) The Fly Paper Clock uses a roller mechanism to turn trapped insects into energy. A blade scraps the bugs off the flypaper and into a microbial fuel cell. Designers James Auger, Jimmy Loizeau and Aleksander Zivanovic are behind the prototype of this carnivorous robot, inspired by nature. I would have never imagined a pesky fly having such a useful application. The Fly Paper Clock takes a common household product and powers it with an unusual source of energy. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 13% | Activity: 90% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Insect-powered Technology:** There is an opportunity for developing technology that harnesses the power of insects for energy. - **Bio-inspired Robotics:** There is a potential for creating robotic designs that are inspired by nature's mechanisms. - **Alternative Energy Sources:** There is a growing trend in exploring unconventional sources of energy, such as insects. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Renewable Energy:** The renewable energy industry could benefit from researching and implementing insect-powered technology. - **Robotics:** The robotics industry can explore bio-inspired designs to create innovative and efficient robots. - **Home Appliances:** The home appliance industry can consider using alternative energy sources like insects to power common household products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Electric Fly Swatters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fly-insect-trap.md) - [Style-Conscious Anti-Insect Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mosqo-bug-zapper.md) - [Unique Timekeeping Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/unique-timekeeping-device.md) - [Kinetic Insect Sculpture Lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dragonfly-balance-light.md) - [Bug-Like Flying Robots](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/micro-insect-robot.md) - [Pixelated Flip-Style Wall Clocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miniot-klapklok.md) - [Chemical-Free Fly Repellent Fans](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shooaway.md) - [Kinetic Pattern Clocks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moir-clock.md) - [Solar-Powered Pest Lanterns](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/solar-zapper-lantern.md)
