# Stark Apartment Exteriors This Black Building Stands Out from Its Wood-Paneled Surroundings By Mishal Omar | Published 2016-07-07 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-buildings References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2016/07/04/this-new-apartment-building-in-san-francisco-is-a-bold-addition-to-the-street/) & [sparchs.net](http://www.sparchs.net/) This black building is a unique structure nestled between two homes on a relatively normal San Francisco street. The bold apartment building immediately captures the attention of those passing by with its [large, haphazardly placed windows, vertical paneling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neville-park) and inky black exterior. Featuring two different apartments, the interior of the building features [black accents throughout](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shadow-barn) -- including black railings, ceilings, kitchen counter tops and window frames. The building is complete with a [black rooftop balcony](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/texas-residence) that overlooks the surrounding area and is a stark contrast to the more standard balconies in view. Black buildings are not very common, especially not ones that are used to house people. The jet-black exterior of this building makes it stand out next to the Victorian and Edwardian houses it sits next to. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.1/10 - Popularity: 90% | Activity: 86% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Black Buildings in Residential Areas:** Opportunity for architects and developers to embrace unique and striking exterior designs for residential buildings. - **Contrasting Design Elements in Architecture:** Potential for incorporating bold and contrasting architectural elements to create visual impact and attract attention. - **Dark Color Palettes in Interior Design:** Innovative use of black accents and dark color schemes to create a modern and stylish interior aesthetic. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture and Construction:** Opportunity for architects and construction companies to explore unconventional and attention-grabbing designs for residential buildings. - **Interior Design:** Potential for interior designers to experiment with darker color palettes and incorporate black accents in residential spaces. - **Real Estate:** Emerging demand for unique and visually distinct residential properties that stand out from traditional housing options. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Creative Work-Encouraging Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/silver-lining-house.md) - [Blackened Wooden Facade Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/centered-home.md) - [Angular Black Cantilevered Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tallowwood-cabin.md) - [Steel Facade-Wrapped Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bomun-house.md) - [Black-Concrete Mountain Houses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-house-1.md) - [Black-Metal Angled Holiday Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shadow-box-house.md) - [Rural Charred Modern Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stanfordville-house.md) - [Spacially Contrasting Home Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barwon-heads-house.md) - [Dual Tonal Wooden Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/svart-hus.md)
