# Dark Ominous Etchings These Black and White Illustrations Contain Spooky Content By Lacey-Jane Walsh | Published 2013-06-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/black-and-white-illustrations References: [pondly](http://www.pondly.com/2013/06/dramatic-scratchboard-illustrations-by-nicolas-delort/) & [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/ndelort) Paris-based artist Nicolas [Delort](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/theatre-for-young-audiences) creates eerie black and white illustrations on a scratch board surface. All of Delort's works are dark and seem to prelude to coming doom or something supernatural ahead. A few of these [spooky etchings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/deddy-bears) even contain a large, shadowy monster. Delort has been dabbling in scratch board art for a while now and uses only a brush, a marker and a scratch board nib to create these creepy illustrations. A few of these drawings are set in a cemetery, which adds a sense of unease to them. One of these ominous art works actually seems to include the grim reaper and a devilish baby -- horns and all. These eerie black and white illustrations make the viewer feel intrigued and a little spooked. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.2/10 - Popularity: 25% | Activity: 4% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Dark Art:** Exploring the growing demand for dark, eerie, and spooky art in different mediums and platforms. - **Minimalism Illustration:** Utilizing negative space and minimalist style illustration to communicate a powerful message in art and design. - **Handmade Creations:** Making unique art and designs through handmade techniques like scratch board, carving, and other manual methods. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art:** Providing unique and visually striking artwork for various platforms, from print to digital media. - **Design:** Applying dark and ominous visual style in designing posters, album covers, and concept art for visual media such as films and video games. - **Craft:** Creating intricate and handmade crafts using traditional techniques like scratch board, and offering them as bespoke items. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Witty Toy-Brand Horror Posters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/horror-poster.md) - [Globalized Spooky Destinations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spooky-adventures.md) - [Monochromatic Ghost Character Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/monochromatic-ghost-character-sculptures.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Artistic Rum Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artists-of-the-abyss.md) - [Artist-Designed Collectible Dining Sets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/killer-napkins.md) - [Limited Humorous Art Prints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-shrigley-1.md) - [Dark Abstracted Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-minyades-exhibition.md) - [Curated Horror Subscriptions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-tales-of-the-weird.md)
