# Suave Vector Surfaces The Birdie Coffee Table Seems Poised to Speed Off in One Direction By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-02-13 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/birdie-coffee-table References: [jasonphillipsdesign](http://www.jasonphillipsdesign.com/concepts/?id=60) Furnishings may also be known as "moveables" but their primary purpose is to be placed firmly in one spot. While it is physically possible to position the Birdie Coffee Table semi-permanently on a patch of carpet, it still looks as though the object intends to shoot off across the floor. Despite having what seems to be a symmetrical elliptical tabletop, the Jason Phillips piece emanates asymmetry. This is largely due to the curious arrangement of supports and the incorporation of an expressive horizontal base. On one short end of the object, a [parabolic metal arch](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twist-side-table) secures the glossy surface, while the other side clings to a another post that punctures it. The gradual thickening of the tabletop towards the latter end, combined with the inward-angled pole and the [boomerang-shaped base](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tangent-table), makes the Birdie Coffee Table look like it's able to take flight. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.2/10 - Popularity: 19% | Activity: 39% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Asymmetric Furniture:** Furniture designers can explore the trend of asymmetry to develop unique and captivating pieces like the Birdie Coffee Table. - **Expressive Basework:** Designers can introduce unusual and expressive base structures in furniture like the Birdie Coffee Table to add visual interest and enhance the product's aesthetic appeal. - **Functional Aesthetics:** The trend of incorporating aesthetics with functional designs like the Birdie Coffee Table can create innovative and impressive pieces while also serving a practical purpose. ### Who This Affects Most - **Interior Design:** Interior design businesses can utilize the trend of asymmetry and expressive basework to create striking and unique furniture pieces and cater to customers' preferences. - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Furniture manufacturers can incorporate the trend of functional aesthetics in their products to increase their appeal and meet customers' changing design preferences. - **Home Decor Retail:** Home decor retailers can tap into the trend of expressive and asymmetrical furniture to offer visually compelling and unique furniture pieces to their customers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculpted One-Piece Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pelican-coffee-table.md) - [Dynamic Strong Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sharp-table.md) - [Curvaceous Animalistic Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookpet-coffee-table.md) - [Wavy Sculptural Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-coffee-tables.md) - [Luxe Low-Slung Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/attraction-coffee-table.md) - [Pointed Foundation Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/donatas-ukauskas.md) - [Dynamic Coffee Table Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ryb-coffee-table.md) - [Fluid Topographic Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dune-table.md) - [Maximalist UFO Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flying-saucer-coffee-table.md)
