Biophotovoltaic biocells are algae-based battery alternatives developed by bio-designer Lucia Giron in collaboration with the [University of Cambridge's Department of Biochemistry](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crab-shell-batteries). The prototypes generate electricity through photosynthesis using living cyanobacteria, [converting light into electrical current](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lightink) without relying on [disposable chemical batteries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/battery-sustainability). Designed to power low-energy devices, the project includes a demonstrator biocell alongside working prototypes for a clock radio and a temperature sensor, showcasing how the technology could be integrated into everyday products.

The transparent biocells expose the living algae while providing the light and gas exchange required for photosynthesis through a semi-permeable membrane and specialized electrode design. A removable outer plate enables components to be reused or recycled, while the cyanobacteria continue producing electricity throughout their lifespan.
