# Fluorescent Tube Artwork Bill Culbert Creates Light-Centered Masterpieces By Meghan Young | Published 2011-11-06 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bill-culbert References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/bill-culbert/) & [suecrockford](http://www.suecrockford.com/artists/images.asp?aid=11) Bill Culbert is an unconventional artist. He might have started out as a trained painter, but in 1960 he branched out to use a rather unorthodox object to center his creations around. Because he began to feel the constraints of the paint medium, Bill Culbert decided to embrace "light as an extension beyond the limitations that canvas brought," as Design Milk puts it. Bill Culbert's works of art are far from constrained. Using all sorts of different lighting from [lamps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alma-light-totem-i) to television and, most notably, [fluorescent lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fluorescence), Bill Culbert re-imagines one of the most basic objects in people's lives. He also shows that [light art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lapso) is something that will be around for years to come. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.6/10 - Popularity: 63% | Activity: 8% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Light Art:** Exploring the use of light as a medium for artistic expression. - **Unconventional Materials:** Using everyday objects in unexpected ways to create art. - **Experiential Art:** Creating immersive art experiences that engage the viewer with light and space. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Design:** Opportunities for artists to push the boundaries of traditional mediums and explore new forms of expression. - **Lighting:** Innovations in lighting technologies and products to enable artists to create unique light-centered artworks. - **Entertainment:** Integration of light art installations and experiences in entertainment venues and events to enhance the viewer's experience. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Tree Branch-Formed Lighting Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/celestial-attraction.md) - [Glassmaking Tubular Pendant Lights](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flare-light.md) - [Gem-Like Sculptural Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cylindrical-lenses.md) - [Math-Driven Lighting Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alba-light.md) - [Utensil Waste Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/nytt-lys.md) - [Stunningly Intricate Light Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shapes-of-light.md) - [Candy-Colored Glass Lighting](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wave-ii.md) - [Retro Glass Sculpture Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/larry-bell.md) - [Immersive Light Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md)
