# Traditionally Weaved Seating Ola Gillgren's Big Basket Chair is Large and Comfy By Meghan Young | Published 2012-02-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/big-basket-chair References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2012/02/16/big-basket-by-ola-gillgren/) & [olagillgren.se](http://www.olagillgren.se/) The Big Basket Chair looks just like what its title suggests, a big basket. Nevertheless, although it does boast the [traditional weaving typical of straw baskets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/basket-sculpture), this seat was crafted out of felt that was woven into a [sturdy metal frame](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wire-chair-concept). It also has a large cutout that allows the sitter's legs to stick out for a more comfortable perch if desired. The Big Basket Chair, however, does have an [upholstered foam seat](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hidahida) that is large enough to curl up in with a companion. Created by Swedish designer Ola Gillgren, the Big Basket Chair is a beautiful work of art. Gillgren writes, "I wanted to make the construction part of the esthetics, and make every part of the chair visible." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.8/10 - Popularity: 59% | Activity: 46% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Weaving Innovation:** Exploring new materials and techniques in traditional weaving to create innovative products like the Big Basket Chair. - **Comfortable Seating:** Designing chairs with unique features, such as a large cutout and upholstered foam seat, to provide more comfortable seating options. - **Artistic Furniture:** Blurring the lines between furniture and art, like the Big Basket Chair, to create visually striking pieces for interior design. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Opportunity for furniture manufacturers to incorporate traditional weaving techniques with modern materials to create unique and comfortable seating options. - **Interior Design:** Innovative furniture designs like the Big Basket Chair can add artistic and functional elements to interior spaces. - **Materials Innovation:** Exploring new materials and techniques for furniture production, such as the use of felt in the Big Basket Chair, opens up opportunities for material innovation in various industries. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Chunky Knitted Quilted Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knitty-chair.md) - [Deco-Inspired Chunky Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mt-curve-big-chair.md) - [Ultra-Precise Woven Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/woven-chair-design.md) - [Cozy Contemporary Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/knoll-perron-bun.md) - [Woven Midcentury Seating Solutions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kida-armchair.md) - [Cozy Oversized Cushion Armchairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perron-pillo-lounge-chair.md) - [Ultra-Comfy Seating Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cushy-lounge-chair.md) - [Colorful Metal Outdoor Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cesto-chair.md) - [Comfort-Focused Outdoor Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-grapy-lounge-chair.md)
