# Modern Biblical Paintings Artist Susanna Bluhm is Inspired by the Old Testament's Song of Songs By Meghan Young | Published 2014-12-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biblical-paintings References: [design-milk](http://design-milk.com/susanna-bluhms-gentle-landscapes/) & [susanna-bluhm](http://www.susanna-bluhm.com/) The biblical paintings of Susanna Bluhm, a contemporary painter based in Seattle, Washington, may not seem religious in the least. Yet this particular series of work was inspired by the Song of Songs from the Old Testament. The bright colors, [bold abstract brushstrokes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pointillism) and overall modern aesthetic is not what many people would expect to see in this context. Yet the biblical paintings are simply the interpretation of one person. For those unfamiliar with the Song of Songs, it is a text that celebrates sexual love, which differs greatly from other religious writings. This is most likely one reason why the biblical paintings are surprisingly modern. As for her actual technique, Bluhm says, “Abstract marks interact with more recognizable shapes, and a kind of narrative ensues." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.4/10 - Popularity: 2% | Activity: 3% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 10% men, 90% women - Primary generations: Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Contemporary Biblical Art:** Exploring modern interpretations of biblical themes through art. - **Disruptive Religious Expression:** Challenging traditional religious imagery and embracing contemporary aesthetics. - **Interpretive Abstraction:** Combining abstract and recognizable elements to create narrative-driven artwork. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Art and Design:** Opportunities to push boundaries and create thought-provoking contemporary artworks. - **Religious and Spiritual:** Innovating religious expression to appeal to contemporary audiences and foster inclusivity. - **Education and Interpretation:** Exploring new approaches to teaching and understanding religious texts through visual art. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Glass Beaded Intricate Artworks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/painting-exhibition.md) - [Artist-Designed Wallpaper](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wallpaper-collection1.md) - [Oil Painting-Inspired Rugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/antonio-santn.md) - [Vibrantly Colorful Dynamic Artwork](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/kayla-rumpp.md) - [Hand-Painted Watercolor Prints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emma-webster.md) - [Female Artist-Honoring Rugs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tomma-bloom-x-ttw-editions-collection.md) - [Vibrant Design Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/neon-primitivism.md) - [Human Embraced-Inspired Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wallmounted-sculpture.md) - [Medicine-Inspired Artful Shows](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/something-for-the-pain.md)
