# Boozy Beer-Measuring Tools (UPDATE) Beertone Helps You Pick a Perfect Brew by Beer Color By Laura McQuarrie | Published 2014-05-20 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/beer-color References: [packagingoftheworld](http://www.packagingoftheworld.com/2014/05/beertone.html) & [beertone.me](http://beertone.me/) Just as there's [Pantone](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/jagermeister-x-pantone) as a handy color reference tool for designers, there's Beertone, a [beer color matching guide](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/formula-guide) for beer enthusiasts. Beertone first launched back in 2012, but since then, creators Alexander Michelbach and Daniel Eugster have been developing a more sophisticated system with crowdsourced spectrophotometers and the aid of beer drinkers all over the world—part of the challenge in getting a more precise color match was figuring out how to exclude foam and bubbles from the equation. With a better system for beer color analysis in place, Beertone has already begun more country-specific beer reference guides for Brazil and Switzerland, which include the colors of 202 different beers and profiles of different breweries in each country. These handy beer reference guides can be purchased for about $40-50, and there are more editions on the way, including one for Germany. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.5/10 - Popularity: 36% | Activity: 62% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 70% men, 30% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Drinking](https://www.trendhunter.com/drinking) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Beer Color Matching Tools:** Beertone is a trend of creating a color reference guide for beer enthusiasts. - **Crowdsourced Spectrophotometry:** The application of crowdsourcing technology is a trend in the development of sophisticated Beertone system. - **Country-specific Beer Reference Guides:** Creating country-specific beer reference guides is a trend to provide more information on the different types of beers on the market. ### Who This Affects Most - **Brewing Industry:** The brewing industry has the opportunity to incorporate beer color matching tools to provide customers with more information about their products. - **Technology Industry:** The technology industry has the opportunity to provide more sophisticated and accurate methods of determining beer color using spectrophotometry. - **Publishing and Printing Industry:** The publishing and printing industry can take advantage of the trend of creating country-specific beer reference guides by producing and distributing these guides to consumers. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Space-Reclaiming Beer Paints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/undrinkable-pints.md) - [Molecular Beer Printers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/molecular-beer-printer.md) - [Conceptual Craft Beer Bottles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sour-glass.md) - [Yeast-Tracking Brewing Apps](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brewing-app.md) - [Affordable Color-Matching Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/datacolor-spectro-55.md) - [Senior-Targeted Beers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/becks-70.md) - [Perfect-Pour Beer Glasses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/perfect-3way-glass.md) - [Expressive Beer Packagings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/buqui-bichi-brewery.md) - [Color-Changing Beer Labels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/coors-bottles.md)
