Danny Ghitis' BDSM Photography Explores Identity

Danny Ghitis' BDSM photography explores the conflict between sexual identity and societal norms. Ghitis reached out to people on FetLife, a social network for lovers of kink. He became acquainted with people who identified as dominants, submissives and transgender, among other epithets.

Ghitis does not reduce his subjects to their sexuality, at the exclusion of everything else about them. To do so would be to present the same "stereotyped 2-D caricatures" we've seen before. Instead, Ghitis established a relationship with each participant, diving into the nuances and complexities of their identity, sexual and otherwise.

Rather than continuing to fetishize and eroticize people who choose to participate in BDSM activities, Ghitis wanted to present a fuller, more accurate portrait of who these people are. More importantly, he wishes to encourage an honest and positive dialogue and sex, gender and identity.
