# DIY Camera Battery Extenders Make Your DSLR Last Five Times Longer with a Little Battery Hacking By Andrew Sztein | Published 2013-02-15 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/battery-extenders References: [lifehacker](http://lifehacker.com/5982145/make-your-dslr-camera-run-four-times-longer-with-a-diy-external-battery-system?tag=battery-life) & [diyphotography.net](http://www.diyphotography.net/how-to-make-a-dslr-battery-run-4-times-longer) Battery extenders can be a photographer's best friend, especially when shooting a long event, doing time-lapse photography or long-exposure photography. Since not every camera brand supports external batteries or can be prohibitively expensive, it's a good thing that the folks at diyphotography.net have put together a comprehensive list of instructions for building your own DIY battery extenders. According to the blog, this is no mere vanity project; if you follow the instructions correctly, the DIY battery extenders can stretch out your DSLR's battery life five times over. The instructions call for a sacrificial battery, and can actually be dangerous if you don't know what you're actually doing. Remember ladies and gentlemen, when you're dealing with soldering and lithium ion batteries, things can explode if they're not done right. Get it right though, and you may never need to use a wall outlet for long term camera use ever again. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 47% | Activity: 25% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 90% men, 10% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [DIY](https://www.trendhunter.com/diy) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **DIY Battery Extenders:** Opportunity for photographers to extend their DSLR's battery life five times over through DIY projects. - **External Battery Compatibility:** Opportunity for camera brands to explore external battery options to cater to photographer needs. - **Battery Technology Advancements:** Opportunity for battery manufacturers to innovate and create longer-lasting batteries for DSLR cameras. ### Who This Affects Most - **Photography:** Opportunity for photographers to incorporate DIY battery extenders into their photography equipment. - **Consumer Electronics:** Opportunity for consumer electronics companies to develop and market aftermarket battery extenders for DSLR cameras. - **Energy Storage:** Opportunity for energy storage companies to explore applications of their technology in the photography industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [USB Port-Equipped Camera Batteries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/npfz1000.md) - [Camera-Mounted Battery Adapters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/power-junkie-v2.md) - [Bike Range Extenders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tritek.md) - [Heavy Duty Handheld Tools](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gba-sp.md) - [Battery-Protecting Charger Devices](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/leo-battery-life-extender.md) - [Diy Battery Chargers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/regenbox-1.md) - [Oversized Field Photography Backpacks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/endurax-xl-camera-backpack.md) - [High-Performance Appliance Batteries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/backup-by-biolite.md) - [Efficient Power Tool Batteries](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dewalt-powerstack.md)
