# Compostable Toilets Biodegradable Peepoo Bags Safely Compost Human Waste By Katie Cordrey | Published 2009-04-22 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/basic-sanitation-biodegradable-peepoo-bags-safely-compost-human-waste References: [greenupgrader](http://greenupgrader.com/7230/improving-sanitation-with-the-peepoo-bag/) & [peepoople](http://www.peepoople.com) The Peepoo bag is a long thin bag with a lined with gauze that is distributed to populations with inadequate options for dealing with human waste. The inside of the biodegradable bag is coated with urea, a non-hazardous chemical fertilizer. Once urine or feces make contact with the urea, decomposition begins. The material is broken into ammonia and carbonate, driven by naturally occurring enzymes in the waste. As the urea is broken down, the acid value of the material increases and sterilization of the waste begins. Viruses, bacteria and parasites carried in the waste are killed over a period of a couple of hours to a few weeks. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.6/10 - Popularity: 43% | Activity: 88% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Compostable Toilets:** Compostable toilets present an innovative solution for populations with inadequate options for dealing with human waste. - **Biodegradable Bags:** Biodegradable bags coated with urea offer a safe and environmentally friendly way to compost human waste. - **Fertilizer Decomposition:** The decomposition process of urea in the Peepoo bags provides an opportunity for the development of innovative fertilizers. ### Who This Affects Most - **Sanitation:** The sanitation industry can leverage compostable toilets to improve waste management in areas with inadequate infrastructure. - **Environmental Sustainability:** The use of biodegradable bags in dealing with human waste contributes to the advancement of sustainable practices in the environmental industry. - **Agriculture:** The decomposition process in Peepoo bags can be harnessed to create innovative fertilizers for the agriculture industry. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Biobased Dog Poop Bags](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/biobased-poop-bags.md) - [Inflatable Portable Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airpot.md) - [Ultra-Compact Camper Toilet Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pact-lite.md) - [Biodegradable Undergarments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sparepair-underwear.md) - [Two-in-One Toilet Pods](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/potty-pods.md) - [Compact Portable Toilet Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portable-toilets.md) - [Toilet Paper Gels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wet-wipe-alternative.md) - [Compostable Drawstring Bags](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/compostable-drawstring-bags.md) - [Compact Portable Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clesana-x1-camping-toilet.md)
