# Scannable Storage Systems The Barcode Bookshelf Aligns Novel Spines to Mimic Store Stickers By Amelia Roblin | Published 2012-07-11 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barcode-bookshelf References: [behance.net](http://www.behance.net/gallery/Barcode-bookshelf/2781903) When you consider that the purpose of a shelf is simply to hold items like [novels in somewhat tidy arrangements](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/twoinone-billy-model), you wonder why examples like the Barcode Bookshelf don't crop up more often. Of course, this particular example is remarkably creative and unique, but the concept of having some fun with the [manufacturing of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bookmarker-table) is too seldom explored. Eduardo Wignall thought up this whimsical hardcover cabinet, drawn from inspiration from an unexpected source. Derived from the retail labels stuck to goods for sale, this [shelving unit](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cozey) features a row of storage slots that vary in thickness like the lines of a scannable symbol. With the insides painted black, the outside in white, and a series of numbers printed along the bottom, the Barcode Bookshelf undoubtedly references the two-dimensional mark. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.3/10 - Popularity: 52% | Activity: 39% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America, South America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Creative Furniture Design:** Opportunity to explore novel and unique designs in the manufacturing of furniture. - **Whimsical Storage Solutions:** Opportunity to create storage units that are inspired by unexpected sources and add a playful touch. - **Innovative Shelving Systems:** Opportunity to design shelving units that mimic scannable symbols for a visually interesting and functional storage solution. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Opportunity for furniture manufacturers to incorporate creative and unique designs into their product lines. - **Home Organization:** Opportunity for companies in the home organization industry to offer whimsical and functional storage solutions. - **Retail and Merchandising:** Opportunity for retailers to use innovative shelving systems that mimic scannable symbols for a visually appealing in-store display. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Dynamic Storage-Display Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shelf-life.md) - [Minimalist Bookish Shelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimal-bookshelf.md) - [Expandable Bookcase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/burrow-index-bookcase.md) - [Video Game-Like Bookcases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tetris-bookcase.md) - [Living Storage Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/treevive.md) - [Abstract Jigsaw-Like Shelving](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spectator-shelf.md) - [Sliding Wintery Landscape Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/manhwabang-bookshelf.md) - [Jigsaw Puzzle-Inspired Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/puzzle-shelf.md) - [Twisting Donut-Shaped Bookshelves](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hullabaloo-bookshelf.md)
