# Arboreal Memorials The Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge by M3architecture Harks Back to 1891 By Marissa Liu | Published 2009-11-13 | Eco Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/barcaldine-tree-of-knowledge-by-m3architecture References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2009/11/13/memorial-for-tree-of-knowledge-by-m3architecture/#more-50900) & [m3architecture](http://www.m3architecture.com/#) The Memorial for the Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge by m3architecture in Queensland, Australia is a breathtaking structure that also seems a little ironic. The [wooden structure](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-forest-datum) surrounds the remains of a dead tree with 18 meter-high hanging timber batons that mimic the shape of the tree’s canopy as it appeared in 1891. The Barcaldine Tree of Knowledge by m3architecture is a memorial that marks the site where the [Australian Labour party](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/peninsula-house) was founded in 1891. The design is environmentally sustainable but it still seems strange to surround a dead tree with more pieces of other dead trees to imitate a live one. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.5/10 - Popularity: 53% | Activity: 15% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Eco](https://www.trendhunter.com/eco) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Memorial Architecture:** Opportunity to create innovative memorials that merge architectural design with historical significance. - **Sustainable Design:** Chance to explore sustainable design concepts that can create environmentally-friendly structures. - **Historical Preservation:** Potential for innovative approaches to preserving historical landmarks and artifacts. ### Where This Applies - **Architecture:** Opportunity for architects to push boundaries of design and create unique memorials. - **Environmentally-friendly Materials:** Market for sustainable and eco-friendly construction materials to support sustainable design projects. - **Cultural Heritage:** Industry that can benefit from innovative preservation methods to protect historical landmarks and artifacts. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Tree-Like Library Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/forest-of-knowledge.md) - [Contemporary Conservationist Treehouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sylvascope-treehouse.md) - [Tree-Covered Vertical Mausoleum](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hollywood-forever-cemetery.md) - [Slatted Steel Treehouse Surroundings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sawmill-treehouse.md) - [Playable Oak Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/funeral-for-a-tree.md) - [Mushroom-Like Wooden Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/carbon-garden-pavilion.md) - [Graveyard-Transformed Public Parks](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/park-of-memories.md) - [Hidden Garden Timber Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-room-around-a-tree.md) - [Tree-Surrounding Mass-Timber Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tree-courtyard-house.md)
