# Street Art Olympians Banksy's Olympic Art is a Jab at Covering Up Graffiti for the Games By Marina Rotharmel | Published 2012-07-24 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/banksys-olympic-art References: [theworldsbestever](http://www.theworldsbestever.com/2012/07/23/banksy-goes-to-the-olympics/) & [theatlanticwire](http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/07/will-london-really-erase-banksys-new-olympics-art/54905/) Beloved [street artist](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dish-pics) Banksy has done it again and created more awesome works, this time in celebration of the 2012 London Olympic games. He's being awfully controversial too, considering how the city is trying to clean up all [graffiti](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elho-x-andr-saraiva) before the big games. His newest pieces can be seen in the [streets of London](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/good-things-come-to-those-who-wait), which feature two Olympians. One of the pieces features an athlete throwing a rocket, while the other shows a pole-vaulter jumping over a broken-down fence. Both pieces are in black and white. The Atlantic Wire Website states," Based on his new works, the artist clearly plans to use the olympics as fodder, essentially daring the city to carry out its threats against street art." Let's hope they don't make the mistake of covering up the awesome art works. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 61% | Activity: 74% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Graffiti](https://www.trendhunter.com/graffiti) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Street Art Resistance:** The rise of street art resistance against cities trying to clean up graffiti could present disruptive innovation opportunities for materials and technology that permit long-lasting and non-toxic street art. - **Controversial Event Art:** The creation of controversial event art, like Banksy's Olympic-inspired works, could bring innovative opportunities in messaging, branding, and viral marketing for event companies. - **Pop-up Art Installations:** The popularity of pop-up street art installations highlights a demand for dynamic and interactive public art experiences, providing opportunities for public art commissions, promotion, and collaboration with urban designers. ### Where This Applies - **Art Materials Manufacturing:** Disruptive innovation opportunities in creating art materials that enable long-lasting and non-toxic street art with greater durability and resistance to weather damage. - **Event Planning:** Disruptive innovation opportunities in creating marketing campaigns with controversial event art installations that spark viral conversation and engage audiences beyond traditional event promotions. - **Public Art Commissioning:** Disruptive innovation opportunities in urban planning and public art that incorporate dynamic and interactive pop-up installations that invite public engagement and foster social connection. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Museum Street Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/piranha-tank.md) - [Bright Celebratory Olympic Posters](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/paris-2024-1.md) - [Statement Street Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1.md) - [Street Art Metaverses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frieze-los-angeles.md) - [Enigmatic Graffiti Incidents](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/enigmatic-graffiti.md) - [Mysterious Painted Car-Door Auctions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/crazy-horse.md) - [Provoking Graffiti Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/david-ruggeri.md) - [Street Artist Digitalized Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shepard-fairey-1.md) - [Mystery Artist Graphic Novels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/his-name-is-banksy.md)
