# Asymmetrical Glass Pipes The 'Balance Pipe' Applies Design Principles to Cannabis Culture By Joey Haar | Published 2016-08-03 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balance-pipe References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2016/08/03/balance-pipe-jamie-wolfond-minimal-glass-smoking-tetra-debut-opening-ceremony/) & [shop-tetra](http://www.shop-tetra.com/products/balance-pipe?variant=25158866310) The efficient 'Balance Pipe' designed by Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based Jamie Wolfond brings a decidedly different look to [cannabis culture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tide-case). With its minimalist asymmetrical shape and simple blue hue, it drastically departs from the curvaceous, psychedelic-colored glass of a typical [marijuana pipe](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/smoking-device). Functionally, the Balance Pipe has as much or more to offer than its traditional rivals. Made from lab-quality [borosilicate glass](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/palo-santo-burner), the Balance Pipe conducts very little heat, meaning that smokers can freely touch the pipe, even while its contents are lit. The flat base allows it to rest on surfaces without risk of spilling and the asymmetrical stem doubles as both a mouthpiece and a carb. As cannabis gains more support for legalization in states and countries around the world, it will no longer conform to a homogeneous subculture. The Balance Pipe shows that smokers can be design-focused while they partake in their drug of choice. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.8/10 - Popularity: 84% | Activity: 51% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Minimalist Smoking Accessories:** The 'Balance Pipe' showcases a shift towards more contemporary and design-focused smoking accessories. - **Innovative Functional Design:** The 'Balance Pipe' highlights an opportunity for cannabis paraphernalia designers to focus on function as well as aesthetics. - **Accessible Drug Paraphernalia:** The 'Balance Pipe' makes drug paraphernalia more approachable by catering to a wider audience with its sleek design and practical elements. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Cannabis Accessories:** The 'Balance Pipe' introduces an opportunity for designers and manufacturers in the cannabis accessory industry to create products with innovative and minimalistic designs. - **Glassware Manufacturing:** The 'Balance Pipe' illustrates a potential for manufacturers in the glassware industry to explore new materials and unique functional designs for smoking apparatuses. - **Design Consulting:** The 'Balance Pipe' creates an opportunity for design consultants to work with cannabis accessory companies to bring unique and functional design elements to their products. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Patented Smoke-Cooling Pipes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/weedgets-mazex-pipe.md) - [Candle-Shaped One-Hitter Glass Pipes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/onehitter-glass-pipe.md) - [Whimsical Cloud-Shaped Pipes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cloudshaped-pipe.md) - [Retro-Futuristic Cannabis Vaporizers](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cannabis-interesting-products-2022.md) - [Sculptural Bong Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-bong.md) - [Balloon Dog-Themed Smoking Accessories](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balloon-dogthemed.md) - [Dual-Purpose Vintage-Inspired Home Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vintageinspired-home-object.md) - [Chic Transparent Glass Bongs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/transparent-glass-bong.md) - [Smokable Art Pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flower-by-edie-parker-1.md)
