# Impossibly Positioned Couches Balance From Within by Jacob Tonski is Outfitted with Space-Age Tech By Meghan Young | Published 2013-08-30 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balance-from-within References: [bookofjoe](http://www.bookofjoe.com/2013/08/balance-from-within-what-happens-when-you-cross-grandmas-sofa-with-a-segway.html) To those with an active imagination, the Balance From Within [art installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble) will seem like nothing short of magic. Of course, clever mechanics can be considered a form of magic. Instead of relying on old illusory tricks, the art piece has been outfitted with space-age technology in order to be propped up as impossibly as it is. That technology involves a reaction wheel, which is a rotating device often used to reorient satellites or telescopes. Balance From Within was created by Jacob Tonski, who teaches at the [University of Miami](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wiggle-collection) in Ohio. According to the artist, Balance From Within is a "meditation on [the nature of human relations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balance-bench), and the things we build to support them." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.3/10 - Popularity: 8% | Activity: 24% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Space-age Technology in Art Installations:** Art installations incorporating space-age technology provide opportunities for immersive and interactive experiences. - **Utilization of Reaction Wheels in Unconventional Applications:** Exploring the use of reaction wheels in non-traditional fields creates potential for innovative and unexpected solutions. - **Art as a Medium for Meditation and Reflection:** Artworks designed to provoke introspection and contemplation offer avenues for emotional exploration and personal growth. ### Where This Applies - **Art and Entertainment:** The art and entertainment industry can benefit from incorporating space-age technology into installations to create captivating experiences for audiences. - **Satellite and Telescope Manufacturing:** The satellite and telescope manufacturing industry can explore new applications for reaction wheels in order to improve reorientation processes and potentially enhance functionality. - **Wellness and Mindfulness:** The wellness and mindfulness industry can leverage art installations that promote meditation and reflection as a means of providing therapeutic and relaxing experiences for individuals. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sculptural Gravity Benches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-bench.md) - [Terrazzo Side Table Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/balance-side-table.md) - [Artfully Balanced Chair Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/halfway-serious.md) - [Celestial Sculptural Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/orbit-collection.md) - [Breath-Responsive Recliners](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aiora.md) - [Kinetic Artful Sand Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arrakis-30.md) - [Kinetic Bloom Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/blooming-furniture.md) - [Fluid Function Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow.md) - [Dual Sculpture Seating Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/immaterial-0001.md)
