# Obsolete Object Drawing Devices Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang Addresses Information Design By Meghan Young | Published 2014-03-06 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/autonomous-machines-by-echo-yang References: [inqmind.co](http://www.inqmind.co/2014/03/autonomous-drawing-machines-by-echo-yang/) & [echoweilunyang](http://www.echoweilunyang.com/) Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang, a freelance graphic designer studying at the [Design Academy Eindhoven](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/capturing-qi), is an art project that revolves around mundane obsolete objects. From a tin chicken toy to a [windup alarm clock](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/triaxial-numechron-clock) and an old [Walkman](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sony-xperia-1-vii), each object has been hacked to become a drawing device. Whether that involves placing a q-tip in the grip of the chicken toy or a pen in the walkman, the resulting creations are surprisingly stunning. Exploring notions of information design and modern generative design processes, Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang applies them in a more creative and nostalgic manner. She writes, "Instead, by showing how machines speak in their own language, based on their internal logics, the proposal is about bringing more awareness to the algorithm inside the ordinary objects around us." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.2/10 - Popularity: 4% | Activity: 25% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Gadgets](https://www.trendhunter.com/gadgets) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Generative Design Processes:** Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang explores generative design processes through the repurposing of obsolete objects, creating opportunities for innovation in fields such as product design and engineering. - **Nostalgic Niche Art Projects:** The art project Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang taps into a niche demographic of those interested in nostalgic, repurposed objects, presenting opportunities for disruptive innovation in the creative industries. - **Algorithmic Object Manipulation:** Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang’s incorporation of the algorithm inside objects to create art presents opportunities for innovation in algorithmic programming and hacking industries. ### Who This Affects Most - **Product Design:** The repurposing of obsolete objects in Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang presents opportunities for innovation in product design, specifically in creating fusion designs that incorporate vintage objects into modern gadgets. - **Creative Industries:** Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang’s niche art project creates opportunities for those in the creative industries to create innovative works for a specific audience seeking nostalgia and repurposed objects. - **Algorithmic Programming:** The algorithmic manipulation of objects in Autonomous Machines by Echo Yang presents opportunities for innovation in the algorithmic programming industry and the use of algorithms in creative contexts. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Ornamental AI Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/prompting-nowhere.md) - [AI-Generated Retrofuturistic Objects](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/retrofuturistic-objects.md) - [Fluid Function Art Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-flow.md) - [Robotic Portrait Sketches](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pankraz-piktograph.md) - [AI-Generated Kitchen Appliances](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/gaudiinspired.md) - [Analog Nostalgia Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/back-to-basics-ii.md) - [Porcelain-Clad Vending Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/automatica-project.md) - [Hand-Cranked AI Storytelling Machines](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/narratron.md)
