# Contorted Spaceship Structures The Austrian Pavilion is Featured at the Shanghai Expo 2010 By Alex Scott | Published 2010-05-01 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/australian-pavilion References: [dezeen](http://www.dezeen.com/2010/04/29/austrian-pavilion-at-shanghai-expo-2010-by-span-and-zeytinoglu/) & [span-arch](http://www.span-arch.com/) I suppose if we ever encounter extraterrestrial beings, their mothership will look something like the Austrian pavilion pictured here. Designed by [SPAN & Zeytinoglu](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/harper-house), the building contains some of the most mind-boggling engineering feats I have seen in a long time. Extremely angled interiors and wave-like exteriors make the structure look like a living optical illusion. The Austrian pavilion is one of many super-modern architectural pieces that will be seen at the expo starting this weekend. Of all the projects though, this one is certainly the [most otherworldly](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/moon-pavilion). ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.6/10 - Popularity: 28% | Activity: 11% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Contorted Spaceship Structures:** Designing buildings with extreme angles and wave-like exteriors that resemble optical illusions. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture:** Exploring innovative design concepts to create visually striking and unique buildings. - **Engineering:** Building unconventional structures with mind-boggling engineering feats. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Glowing Sphere Art Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/netherlands-pavilion.md) - [Climate-Sensitive Pavilion Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/querkraft.md) - [Code-Generated Pavilion Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-orb.md) - [Living Structure-Based Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/canada-pavilion.md) - [Transformed Disused Steelwork Structures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/expo-cultural-park-greenhouse.md) - [Interactive Architectural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/folding-landscape.md) - [Organic Spiral Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasona-natureverse-pavilion.md) - [Voyage Boat-Like Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bahrain-pavilion.md) - [Vast Wooden Structural Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/grand-ring.md)
