# Disturbing Interactive Animal Depictions The ROA Instillation Isn't for the Faint of Heart By Sophia Pelka | Published 2012-02-29 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artist-roa References: [english.mashkulture.net](http://english.mashkulture.net/2012/02/29/roa-defragmentation-exhibit/) & [flickr](http://www.flickr.com/people/roagraffiti/) Belgian Artist [ROA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/roa-fw26) created the 'Defragmentation' instillation for Scarlett Gallery. Normally working in [street art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/surreal-street-art-1) and using concrete as a canvas, the artist has moved his talent indoors. Though roofing his skill, ROA maintains his hard edge with spontaneous brush marks and simplistic color schemes. The installation features ROA's signature black and white beasts. The lumpy creatures boast exaggerated proportions and expressions thick with confusios. ROA's composition leaves the beasts sprawling on top of one another, in a claustrophobic heap. While the the exhibition and artistic technique is excellent and memorable, ROA takes it to the next level with an [interactive backdrop](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/marine-ecosystem-sculptures). The animals are painted on shifting panels in a warehouse. The viewers are invited to move and compile the beast to their liking, often leaving them dismembered and bloody. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.1/10 - Popularity: 37% | Activity: 18% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Modern](https://www.trendhunter.com/modern) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Interactive Art Installations:** Opportunity for artists to incorporate audience interaction into their artwork, creating a unique and immersive experience. - **Street Art in Galleries:** Growing trend of street artists bringing their talent indoors and showcasing their work in galleries, blurring the line between street art and traditional art forms. - **Exaggerated Beast Depictions:** Emerging trend of artists creating surreal and exaggerated depictions of animals, pushing the boundaries of traditional representation. ### Who This Affects Most - **Art Galleries:** Art galleries can explore new ways to engage their visitors by featuring interactive art installations that encourage audience participation. - **Street Art:** Street artists can expand their reach and audience by showcasing their work in galleries, allowing for a new source of revenue and exposure. - **Animal-related Art:** Artists specializing in animal depictions have the opportunity to experiment with innovative and exaggerated styles, attracting attention and creating a unique artistic niche. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Folk Creature Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fibredog.md) - [Striking Urban Wildlife Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/clare-allin.md) - [Gas Rig Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/striking-art-installation.md) - [Perception-Challenging Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/becoming-familiar.md) - [Brain-Like Labyrinths](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brash-collective.md) - [Robotic Digital Surveillance Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/accept-all.md) - [Monumental Air Installation](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/iwagumi-air-scape.md) - [Dynamic Public Artwork Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/born-to-be-wild-1.md) - [Broken-Aesthetic Sculpture Collections](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/brokenaesthetic-sculpture-collection.md)
