Architect Arney Fender Katsalidis is commissioned to transform an old railway site into a low-carbon neighborhood.
Titled Campo Urbano, this project takes part in the Reinventing Cities program - which strives towards net-zero urban planning projects. Katsalidis will recreate Rome's Tuscolana station into a mixed-use development. It will span 24,000 square meters of space and will be a car-free and self-sufficient energy-producing neighborhood. The project will feature a series of reversible buildings that are designed to be taken apart once no longer useful. Biomaterials will be favored in its construction, and the architect believes Campo Urbano will become carbon negative within a 60-year timeframe.
The design proposal achieved a LEED Zero energy rating by employing a mix of photovoltaics and biomass power.
