# Languidly Lingering Shoots The 'Another Room' Series by Haley Jane Samuelson is Haunting By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-04-02 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/another-room References: [vectroave](http://vectroave.com/2012/03/haley-jane-samuelson-photography/) & [haleyjsamuelson](http://www.haleyjsamuelson.com/gallery/another-room/) New York-based photographer Haley Jane Samuelson recently unveiled her latest series titled, 'Another Room.' The photographs evoke a distinctly [haunting feeling](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/silent-echoes). Each of the scenes impress upon the viewer that something is missing -- or rather lost -- despite the clarity and definition of Samuelson's photography. How Samuelson does this is difficult to articulate with words, owing to the supremely visual nature of Another Room. The use of [natural light and darkness](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/between-the-lightness-and-the-darkness) is central aspect of these photographs. In much of the Another Room a soft white light pours through open windows cutting a streak of contrast between itself and the darkness. People are the most prominent objects in the series; they are often portrayed pursuing some motion that has been cut short by the camera's shutter. In this way Another Room achieves a sort of limbo effect. The lives of the people in the photographs and even the [constant interplay of light and dark](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lightware-series) are put on hold. This, perhaps, is how that haunting effect is born: Another Room arrests moments before they can be realized. What would have been lingers in one's mind. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 6.5/10 - Popularity: 92% | Activity: 94% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Haunting Photography:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore unique ways to create haunting and emotionally impactful photographs that leave viewers with a sense of mystery and intrigue. - **Playing with Light and Darkness:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Develop innovative techniques to manipulate natural light and darkness in photography to create captivating visual contrasts and evoke specific emotions. - **Capturing Moments in Limbo:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Experiment with capturing photos that suspend moments in time, creating a sense of anticipation and curiosity in viewers. ### Where This Applies - **Photography:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Introduce new technologies or techniques in photography that push the boundaries of artistic expression and evoke strong emotional reactions. - **Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Explore unconventional art mediums and approaches to challenge traditional notions of visual storytelling and evoke deeper connections with the audience. - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporate elements of haunting and suspenseful photography into interior design concepts to create unique and immersive spaces that evoke emotional responses from occupants. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Blurry Abstract Photography Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/optical-allusion.md) - [Photography Project Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/still-life-1.md) - [Immersive Light Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/spencer-finch.md) - [Personal Nostalgic Photo Books](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/holy-ohio.md) - [Painting-Immersive Photo Exhibits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/new-ground-exhibition.md) - [AI-Generated Poetic Photo Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emilio-alarcn.md) - [Ethereal Oil Lamp Systems](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-realm-of-light.md) - [Wonderous Art Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/your-psychoacoustic-light-ensemble.md) - [Emotional Light Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/miror-collection.md)
