In particular, they bring to mind the work of Gustave Dore, a French artist who lived in the 1800s. Full of incredible detail, each illustration has a thatched aesthetic that recall vintage artworks from children's books and more. Yet Animal Kingdom by Mark Summers is definitively modern. From the [vibrant colors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-digital-artwork) to the fluid lines, it is hard not to believe so. Created using the medium of scratchboards, the art series is testament to a strong talent. Since Summers has done work for Time, The Atlantic Monthly, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated and The National Law Journal, that comes as no surprise. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 1.1/10 - Popularity: 18% | Activity: 7% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Engraving-inspired Artwork:** Opportunity for artists to create modern illustrations that pay homage to traditional engraving techniques. - **Thatched Aesthetic:** Potential for vintage-style illustrations to make a resurgence in children's books and other forms of art. - **Medium of Scratchboards:** Emerging market for artists to explore the unique artistic possibilities of scratchboards. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Design:** Artists can incorporate engraving-inspired techniques to create unique and visually striking artwork. - **Publishing:** Publishers can capitalize on the popularity of vintage aesthetics by commissioning illustrations with a thatched aesthetic for children's books. - **Art Supplies:** Opportunity for art supply manufacturers to meet the demand for scratchboards and related tools among artists and illustrators. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Almost-Extinct Animal Sculptures](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fauna-series.md) - [Otherworldly Wooden Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-sculptures-1.md) - [Hand-Painted Watercolor Prints](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emma-webster.md) - [Canadian Animal-Themed Kitchenware](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/our-animals-maple-syrup-jar.md) - [Outdoor Floral Sculpture Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptures-at-kew-gardens.md) - [Artist-Approved Intricate Wallpaper Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/printed-decors.md) - [Artistic Animalistic Tequilas](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dobel-atelier-animales-endmicos.md) - [Artistic Rum Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/artists-of-the-abyss.md) - [Kyoto-Inspired Solo Art Exhibitions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ode-to-kyoto.md)
