# Cantilevered Reed Staircases Amaral Loft Has a Mesmerizing Means of Ascension to its Second Floor By Amelia Roblin | Published 2013-01-25 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amaral-loft References: [contemporist](http://www.contemporist.com/2013/01/23/amaral-loft-stairs-by-feedback-studio/) & [feedback-studio.net](http://www.feedback-studio.net/?portfolio=apto-102-viana-do-castelo-portugal-2011) The installation of a standard stairway in a home assumes a surprisingly significant area that can take away from the interior comforts you might have liked to include. The Amaral Loft was a refurbishment project by feedback-studio that thankfully lost very little valuable space thanks to its striking set of steps. Access between the top and bottom levels of the luxe but [minimalist open plan floors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/minimalist-cocoon) is granted by the clever incorporation of a [nearly spiral staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cobalt-coach-house) that's been tucked into a closet-sized nook in the [Portuguese apartment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/a-house-within-a-few-lines). There is no bulky support structure beneath the treads and no walls or railings to contain them, for the Amaral Loft's upstairs access is formed from slender and gently tapering slabs that appear to float out of the surrounding walls. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.6/10 - Popularity: 52% | Activity: 19% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Cantilevered Staircases:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Designing staircases with no bulky support structure and a minimalist aesthetic. - **Space-saving Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Creating innovative ways to utilize small spaces, such as incorporating stairs into closets. - **Floating Staircases:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Developing stairs that give the illusion of floating for a visually striking design. ### Where This Applies - **Interior Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporating innovative staircase designs into interior spaces. - **Architecture:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Redesigning staircases in architectural projects to optimize space and create visually appealing structures. - **Furniture Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Designing staircases as furniture pieces that seamlessly blend with the overall interior design. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Bold Architectural Renovations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/flat-iron-house.md) - [Timbered Passage Stair Extensions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wooden-annex.md) - [Sculptural Townhome Staircases](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/atelier-pierre-thibault-1.md) - [Concrete Spiral Staircase Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cadenza.md) - [Elevated Leisure Habitats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/elevated-leisure-habitat.md) - [Reimagined Traditional Library Ladders](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/step-by-step-ladder.md) - [Renovated Compact Loft Apartments](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vessel-project.md) - [Dutch Barn Spiralled Staircase](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/julia-van-beuningen.md) - [Sculptural Staircase Penthouses](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/frederic-chopin.md)
