# Modular Rhombus Tables These Alvaro Catalan de Ocon Designs are Highly Conceptual By Josh Triantafilou | Published 2012-04-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/alvaro-catalan-de-ocon References: [ignant.de](http://www.ignant.de/2012/04/17/rayuela/) & [catalandeocon](http://catalandeocon.com/) [Barcelona](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/victoria-alberts-barcelona-collection)-based industrial designer Alvaro Catalan de Ocon's work is [minimalist, clean and sharp](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/arba), while avoiding the sterility and austerity that so often accompanies low-key design. He accomplishes this through an inventive use of a single shape: the rhombus. Only three of these polygons are needed to create a hexagon, explains de Ocon. The designer points out that the hexagon is an ideal shape for a surface. Looking at the work featured here, de Ocan's point works well. Form and function are not always easy to incorporate into a single coherent concept. Of course, there are many [pieces of furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/altherr-dsile-park) that have done this; however, most of this furniture is derivative of general templates established over time. To create original, inventive work that serves its practical purpose while maintaining a pleasing and interesting aesthetic requires the talent of a designer like de Ocan. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 4.7/10 - Popularity: 83% | Activity: 49% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### Key Themes Behind This Trend - **Minimalist Design:** Exploring the use of minimalistic and clean design aesthetics in furniture to create unique and pleasing concepts. - **Modular Furniture:** Designing furniture pieces using modular components to allow for personalized and flexible arrangements. - **Geometric Shapes:** Embracing the use of geometric shapes, such as the rhombus, to create visually striking and functional designs. ### Where This Applies - **Furniture Manufacturing:** Incorporating minimalist and modular concepts in furniture manufacturing to offer customers customizable and aesthetically appealing options. - **Interior Design:** Utilizing innovative geometric shapes and modular furniture in interior design projects to create unique and visually stimulating spaces. - **Product Design:** Exploring the use of minimalistic design principles and geometric shapes in product design to create innovative and functional consumer goods. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Modern Customizable Table Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/customizable-table-design.md) - [Interlocking Puzzle-Like Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/connect-table.md) - [Dynamic Geometric Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/designated-side-table.md) - [Geometric Cutout Side Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/designated-table.md) - [Architecture-Inspired Modular Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dust-order.md) - [Geometric Table Series](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/solis-collection.md) - [Playful Geometric Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/collection-co.md) - [Dynamic Coffee Table Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ryb-coffee-table.md) - [Colorful Contemporary Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/runda-tables.md)
