Photographer Alicia Vera met Eden, a 21-year-old sex worker, in a strip club in San Francisco. Vera was working on a project exploring female sexuality and women's rights at the time; however, once she began to form a close, personal relationship with Eden, who was then only 18, her project evolved into a devoted exploration of one woman's life.
Vera went on to document Eden's personal and professional life. When Eden was threatened with potential jail time after her third arrest, she was forced to confess both her profession, and the impending legal troubles associated with it, to her mother. What followed was a heavy, turbulent conversation.
The series oftentimes examines Eden within the context of her childhood home. It is there the viewer sees, most poignantly, that Eden, the child, still exists within Eden, adult. The two versions of herself struggle, and repeatedly fracture, in an attempt to form a cohesive, singular identity.
