# Knife-Based Feline Portraits The Aja Apa-Soura Images of Cats Use Palettes to Produce Artwork By Jordy E | Published 2013-03-25 | Lifestyle Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aja-apasoura References: [mymodernmet](http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/sagittarius-gallery-aja-grumpy-cats) & [sagittariusgallery](http://www.sagittariusgallery.com/) The Aja Apa-Soura Grumpy Cats series updates [classic art pieces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/doraemon-meets-the-louvre) with his depictions of exceptionally glum felines. To produce the artwork, he took from [Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-van-gogh-musum) and Edvard Munch's The Scream. A series of rivets and splices are present in Apa-Soura's work. This comes of the tools that he takes from during his production process as he used a palette knife to deliver these disgruntled faces. While [viral videos and images of cats](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pharaohs-lost-cat) have for the most part concentrated on the cute and cuddly side of the animals, Apa-Soura has instead chosen to focus on the felines in their most vexed state. Pet owners and lovers can certainly sympathize with these seldom seen sentiments. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 35% | Activity: 38% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 30% men, 70% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial - Top markets: North America ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Lifestyle](https://www.trendhunter.com/lifestyle) > [Pets](https://www.trendhunter.com/pets) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Grumpy Cat Art:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Artists can explore creating unique and relatable artwork by portraying animals with unconventional emotions. - **Palette Knife Painting:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Painters can experiment with using palette knives to create textured and expressive art pieces that stand out from traditional brushwork. - **Emotional Animal Portraits:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Photographers and artists can capture animals' rarely expressed emotions, challenging the mainstream depiction of cute and cuddly animals. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Art and Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: The art industry can embrace unconventional techniques and subject matters to attract new audiences and create fresh, captivating artwork. - **Paint and Pigments:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Manufacturers and suppliers of art materials can develop and market specialized tools, like palette knives, that cater to artists' demand for unique and expressive techniques. - **Pet Products and Services:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Businesses in the pet industry can tap into the market of pet owners and lovers who seek relatable and empathetic representations of their furry companions. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [AI Pet Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/drawmypet.md) - [Custom Pet Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/portrait-mom.md) - [Humorous Cat Collectables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tired-cats-gachapon.md) - [Stunning Origami Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/origami-portaits.md) - [Cat-Inspired Fuzzy Frames](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dry-studio-petbrick-65.md) - [Adorable Cat Milk Cartons](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/adorable-blue-cat.md) - [Apocalypse Post Pandemic Art](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/contemporary-urban-art.md) - [AI Pet Portraits](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/petpic-ai.md) - [Sculptural Feline Bottles](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/javier-calleja-2.md)
