The house features a simple west coast aesthetic of a textural white house. The home is bordered by a nature reserve that adjoins the ocean, making the views truly spectacular. Maddock wanted to take advantage of the [coastal dune environment](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dreal-house) in his design; however, the front dune posed a challenge by sitting higher than the rest. In order to accommodate the dunes, home and views, Maddock structured the house as a double storey building with imaginative outdoor spaces. The ocean view is visible from every room inside. The architect describes the home's construction by saying "Both the front and rear pavilions are two storeys and the windows are sliced through to the parapet to emphasize the verticality[...]There is a [seamless flow between these spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/standing-wave-house) and a sense of uninterrupted connection between inside and outside." ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.7/10 - Popularity: 78% | Activity: 25% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Coastal Home Design:** Designing contemporary coastal homes with a focus on using the natural environment as part of the structure and decor to achieve a sense of uninterrupted connection between inside and outside. - **Vertically Emphasized Windows:** Creating modern homes that incorporate large windows cut through the parapet to emphasize verticality and take advantage of stunning ocean views. - **Imaginative Outdoor Living Spaces:** Incorporating outdoor living spaces that complement and enhance the natural environment, providing a sense of uninterrupted connection between inside and outside while maximizing the view. ### Who This Affects Most - **Residential Architecture:** Using modern design techniques to create contemporary homes that effectively use natural elements and innovative ways of building to achieve exciting living spaces. - **Green Building Industry:** Using eco-friendly materials and sustainable building practices to create homes that complement and blend in with natural surroundings. - **Luxury Real Estate Market:** Catering for high-end home buyers with high-quality unique and innovative designs that celebrate the views, natural features, and the use of modern technology to achieve a state-of-the-art living space. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Off-Grid Oceanside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/campos-studio.md) - [Thick-Walled Coastal Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hytte-riverview.md) - [Coastal View Island Residences](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/cape-drive-residence.md) - [Coastal Island Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/pasparakisfriel.md) - [Organic Coastal Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/diachok-architects.md) - [Meadow-Overlooking Sleek Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/studioac-1.md) - [Juxtaposing South Californian Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/emerald-bay.md) - [Modern Architectural Seaside Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/strandhouse.md) - [Luxurious Contemporary Homes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tropical-living.md)
