# Public Potty Designs RIBA Asks Four Architects to Re-Imagine the Communal Commode By Rachel | Published 2009-08-18 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/RIBA-toilet References: [archdaily](http://www.archdaily.com/32344/a-public-toilet-according-to-the-architects/) & [architecture](http://www.architecture.com/TheRIBA/175thAnniversary/FlushedWithPride/FlushedWithPride.aspx) In connection with [BBC](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/physical-wearables-collection)’s [Radio Four](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/stay-under-the-radar-retreat), [RIBA](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/raise-the-roof-building-for-change) asked five architecture firms to re-imagine the public toilet. An interesting goal considering the relatively standard design of public toilets, the challenge was issued because RIBA noted that public toilets were once a place to show off local architecture, and is now more of a public eye sore. The five architecture firms came up with incredibly different design ideas, with some opting for cool sculptural design, one firm design around a fountain, and one using a cement head. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 0.9/10 - Popularity: 10% | Activity: 10% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial - Top markets: North America, Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/design) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Innovative Toilet Designs:** Opportunities for disruptive innovation in creating unique and aesthetically pleasing public toilets. - **Sculptural Public Restrooms:** Disruptive innovation potential in incorporating artistic and visually striking elements into public toilet designs. - **Revitalizing Public Restroom Experience:** Opportunities for disruptive innovation in improving the overall experience and functionality of public restrooms. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Architecture and Urban Design:** Disruptive innovation potential in rethinking and transforming public restroom structures and aesthetics within urban environments. - **Sanitary and Plumbing Industry:** Opportunities for disruptive innovation in developing new technologies and systems for public restroom sanitation and efficiency. - **Smart City Solutions:** Disruptive innovation potential in integrating smart technologies to enhance the accessibility, cleanliness, and maintenance of public toilets in smart city infrastructures. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Enclosed Japanese Park Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/toiletowa.md) - [Illuminated Public Artful Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hiroo-east-park.md) - [Light-Filled Public Restrooms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/vivid-toilet-interior.md) - [Amorphous Public Restrooms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/amoeba-public-restroom.md) - [Brutalist Smart Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/formation-02.md) - [Playful Public Seating Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/playful-public-seating.md) - [Artfully Sculptured Textured Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-formation-02.md) - [Sculptural Public Seating](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sculptural-public-seating.md) - [Inflatable Portable Toilets](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/airpot.md)
