# Kaleidoscopic Parking Lots The 72DP Mural Brings Vibrant Colors to a Drab Space By Meghan Young | Published 2012-02-17 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/72dp-mural References: [psfk](http://www.psfk.com/2012/02/art-parking-lot.html) & [craigandkarl.tumblr](http://craigandkarl.tumblr.com/) It is easy for some architectural spaces to be overlooked, parking lots being one of them, but the 72DP Mural project shows the impact a beautifully designed interior can have on people. This is especially the case for areas that people visit on a daily basis but never pay much heed to. In place of drab and cold concrete floors, walls and ceilings, the 72DP Mural transforms the parking lot into a [gigantic kaleidoscope](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colorscape-installation). Almost every surface of the space has been painted over in vibrant colors of orange, yellow and more. Designed by Craig Redman and Karl Maier, a design duo based in Sydney and New York, the 72DP Mural is fit for an art gallery. Maier says, “The resulting design is a dynamic mix of [overlapping geometric forms](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/my-two-cars-garage) that mirror and respond to the angularity of the architecture.” ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.9/10 - Popularity: 47% | Activity: 61% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, Europe, Asia ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Architecture](https://www.trendhunter.com/architecture) ## Key Themes ### Why This Trend Is Growing - **Vibrant Parking Lot Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Creating visually stunning parking lots to enhance the overall experience and attract more visitors. - **Immersive Interior Transformation:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Applying mural and artistic designs to overlooked spaces like parking lots to create immersive environments and evoke positive emotions. - **Geometric and Colorful Art Installations:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Integrating geometric and colorful art installations in architectural spaces to create unique and visually appealing experiences. ### Industries Being Reshaped - **Architecture and Design:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Collaborating with artists and designers to integrate innovative and visually captivating elements into architectural projects. - **Parking Lot and Facility Management:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Incorporating artistic and vibrant designs in parking lots to differentiate from competitors and attract more customers. - **Art and Murals:** Disruptive innovation opportunity: Expanding the use of art and murals beyond traditional spaces and exploring opportunities to transform overlooked environments. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Playfully Vibrant Studio Spaces](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/colgio-salesiano.md) - [Color-In Commuter Tunnels](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/masterpeace-painting.md) - [Automotive Parking Lot Pop-Ups](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/parking-lot-pop-up.md) - [Vibrant City Installations](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/craig-karl2.md) - [Park-Covered Structural Buildings](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/ola-palermo.md) - [Pink-Detailed Art Gallery Interiors](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/superzoom.md) - [Ultra-Playful Studio Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/bright-workspace.md) - [Mural Design Assistants](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/art-by-squares.md) - [Kaleidoscope Vibrant Pavilions](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/mountain-view.md)
