An American company by the name of Solid Concepts has successfully created the world's first 3D-printed metal gun based off the design of the classic M1911 pistol. The weapon joins a growing list of firearms made using 3D printing. However, unlike the 3D-printed guns that have stolen the headlines throughout 2013, this pistol is made using actual metal. (The previous guns were made using plastic).

Since it is made out of metal, this pistol is a lot stronger than 3D-printed guns made of plastic. How tough is the world's first 3D-printed metal gun, you ask? It has fired over 400 rounds and hasn't broken yet. Solid Concepts, which has a Federal Firearms License, created the pistol to prove that 3D printing was more than just for novelty items. The company also wanted to show that 3D printing could be used to create high-quality replacement gun parts in a short amount of time.
