# Shimmering Cantilevered Seating Solutions The 2023 Shadow Chair from Duffy London is Dazzling By Michael Hemsworth | Published 2023-07-07 | Art & Design Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2023-shadow-chair References: [homecrux](https://www.homecrux.com/shadow-chair-by-duffy-london-in-gold-finish/202423/) & [duffylondon](https://duffylondon.com/collections/furniture/chairs/shadow-chair/) The 2023 Shadow Chair has been created by Christopher Duffy and his namesake [Duffy London](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/limitededition-coffee-table) design studio as a shimmering furniture piece that demands attention for multiple reasons. The chair maintains a cantilevered construction that appears to float above the ground and actually hides its support in its shadow to further enhance the optical illusion. The chair is covered with [mirror-polished steel](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/through-chrome-reflections) and a touch of gold to give it a glimmering appearance that catches the light from all directions. The chair thus balances function and form to achieve a truly eye-catching furniture silhouette. Duffy London commented on the 2023 Shadow Chair saying, "The Shadow Chair has been reimagined for 2023 with a new fragmented design that emphasizes contrast, through the [interplay of light and shadow](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shadow-play-collection). We wanted to push the design further, emphasizing contrasts and finding the right balance between two opposing elements.” Image Credit: Duffy London ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 3.2/10 - Popularity: 67% | Activity: 13% | Freshness: 16% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: Europe ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Art & Design](https://www.trendhunter.com/artdesign) > [Furniture](https://www.trendhunter.com/furniture) ## Key Themes ### What's Driving This Trend - **Cantilevered Furniture:** The shimmering construction of the 2023 Shadow Chair demonstrates the trend towards cantilevered furniture designs that create an illusion of floating. - **Mirror-polished Surfaces:** The mirror-polished steel surface of the chair highlights the trend of using reflective materials to add a touch of luxury and create eye-catching furniture pieces. - **Optical Illusion Design:** The use of shadow and the play of light in the chair's design showcases the trend of incorporating optical illusions into furniture to create visually striking pieces. ### Who This Affects Most - **Furniture Design:** Furniture designers can explore the use of cantilevered structures and mirror-polished surfaces to create innovative and attention-grabbing pieces. - **Luxury Home Decor:** Luxury home decor brands can incorporate optical illusion designs into their products to offer unique and visually stunning options for customers. - **Interior Design:** Interior designers can use furniture with cantilevered construction and mirror-polished finishes to create visually interesting and captivating spaces for their clients. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Stainless Steel Reflective Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dream-view-chair.md) - [Striking Limited-Edition Coffee Tables](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/limitededition-coffee-table.md) - [Marbles-Inspired Intricate Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/shepherd-studio.md) - [Suspenseful Statement Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/edgeofyr.md) - [Structurally Complex Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/the-arch-chair.md) - [Floating Component Dining Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/floating-top-chair.md) - [Illusory Disconnected Component Armchairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/fly-armchair.md) - [Industrial Light-Equipped Chairs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/hidden-light-chair.md) - [Wavy Lounge Chair Designs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/wavy-lounge-chair.md)
