# Laptop Recycling Programs 2012 CES Exhibitor 'Labdoo' Sends Laptops to Education-Starved Children By Harris Jay Rosenberg Alterman | Published 2012-01-10 | Tech Source: Trend Hunter, https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2012-ces-exhibitor-labdoo References: [ces12.mapyourshow](http://ces12.mapyourshow.com/5_0/exhibitor_details.cfm?exhid=T0008902) & [labdoo.org](http://www.labdoo.org/) The 2012 CES Exhibitor 'Labdoo' has created a system that [recycles old laptops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/technological-barriers) and sends them to children who need education in the developing world. The program begins by tagging every laptop whose owner gives consent; once that laptop becomes unused by its owner, it’s sent somewhere where it gets cleaned up and installed with [educational programs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/technology-gap). To get the laptop to developing countries without having to use extra CO2 emissions, Labdoo uses social media to arrange 'Dootrips.' Anyone can sign up for a Dootrip, which means that if a traveler has extra space in their luggage, they act as middlemen who personally deliver the tech piece to its destination. When the computer eventually stops functioning, it gets shipped to a [recycling plant](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/aquafade) and the cycle of life is complete. The 2012 CES Exhibitor Labdoo’s system is a bit complicated, but the idea of it is extremely economical and would bring education to developing countries. So if you have a laptop that is just sitting around collecting dust, check out Labdoo and get that computer to someone who could really use it. ## Trend Insights (Trend Hunter) - Score: 2.7/10 - Popularity: 19% | Activity: 54% | Freshness: 8% - Audience gender: 50% men, 50% women - Primary generations: Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X - Top markets: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa ## Categories [Trend Hunter](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends) > [Tech](https://www.trendhunter.com/tech) > [Computers](https://www.trendhunter.com/computers) ## Key Themes ### What Makes This Trend Stand Out - **Laptop Recycling Programs:** Opportunity for innovative laptop recycling programs that leverage social media to reach developing countries and provide education. - **CO2 Emissions Reduction:** Disruptive innovation opportunities for reducing CO2 emissions by using social media to connect volunteers with unused technology and transporting it by plane for delivery to developing countries. - **Educational Access:** Innovative solutions to increase access to education in developing countries by repurposing unused laptops through recycling programs and redistributing them to schools in need. ### Sectors Adopting This - **Tech Recycling:** Opportunities for tech recycling companies to develop new programs that repurpose unused laptops for educational purposes and find cost-effective ways to transport them. - **Education:** Innovative solutions for education organizations to leverage unused technology to increase access to education in developing countries and bridge the digital divide. - **Social Media:** Opportunities for social media platforms to collaborate with recycling and education organizations to facilitate Dootrips and connect volunteers with technology donations for educational purposes. ## Related on Trend Hunter - [Sustainable Laptop Concepts](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/dell-concept-luna.md) - [Eco-Friendly Laptops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/14-inch-eco-edition.md) - [Ecologically Conscious Laptops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/sustainable-laptop.md) - [Tool-less Repairable Laptops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/concept-luna.md) - [E-Waste Take-Back Boxes](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/tech-take-back-box.md) - [Student-Focused Laptop Repair Programs](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/chromebook-repair.md) - [Environmentally Friendly Laptop Models](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/acer-chromebook-vero-514.md) - [Accessible Refurbished Laptops](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/framework-1.md) - [Recycled Material Laptop Ranges](https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/2023-lenovo-thinkpad.md)
