Speaker Russell Foster discusses the importance of getting enough rest in this sleep speech. Foster reveals that the average person will sleep for a total of 32 years throughout the course of their lives (assuming that they live to be at least 90). The fact that sleep takes up a third of one’s life means that it’s important, but why?

Foster says that a sleep-deprived brain is unable to function properly, and unable to learn new things effectively. He claims that most drivers will fall asleep at the wheel at least once in their lives. He also states that large scale disasters, such as Chernobyl have been linked to poor decision making due to fatigue. Foster urges individuals to take sleep seriously.

Russell Foster says that most people need at least eight hours of sleep a night, and on average most people get between five and six hours of sleep a night. Foster encourages people to stop drinking caffeine after noon and get serious about resting.
