The inability for individuals to empathize with each other is discussed by Sir Ken Robinson in this Importance of Creativity Speech. The author of 'The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything,' mentions how throughout history mankind has been able to live in harmony with its neighbors. Only within the last 300 years has there been an increase in neighbor conflict, an occurrence that Robinson attributes to the exile of feeling in education.

During moments of extreme violence or cruelty empathy is repressed in order for individuals to carry out what would normally be something unimaginable. The kindling of imagination is precisely what makes certain actions impossible to do one another because people are connecting on the basis of intuition and mutuality.

Connecting to one another through creativity is lost in an industrialized system of education, resulting in disaffection and disengagement.
