Victor Vescovo gave a keynote discussing traveling to the bottom of the ocean. Vescovo was the first person to reach the bottom of the Atlantic, as well as the Southern Ocean. He is also one of 12 US citizens to complete what is called the 'Explorers Grand Slam,' which involves climbing the highest mountain on all seven continents.
Victor Vescovo opens his keynote by stating that for the previous four years he has been leading a team focused on creating the most sophisticated and deepest diving submersible ever. Vescovo also notes that he personally pilots submersible. He continues to state the majority of the ocean is unexplored.
Vescovo goes on to detail how the submersible was able to record footage of the bottom of the Atlantic ocean for the first time. He then outlines how the submersible is comprised of titanium and is a near-perfect spherical shape. The shape and materials allow it to withstand the immense pressure at the bottom of the ocean.
Victor Vescovo continues to note that on each dive new species are found. Additionally, in the future, they could take scientists down and conduct thousands of dives to explore the area and document the new species found. Vescovo concludes his keynote by stating that with the new submersible they can open the door to ocean exploration.
