Here is a great example of creating grassroots support of switching over to lower wattage lights: volunteers from Brookwood Community Church will distribute free compact fluorescent light bulbs outside the Wal-Mart store at Southbridge from 11 a.m. until supplies are gone. The free 60-watt replacement bulbs save consumers money by saving energy. The energy savings also translate into benefits for the environment. According to the government’s “Energy Star” Web site, compact fluorescent light bulbs (or CFLs) use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. The Web site notes that changing just one light bulb in every home in America would save the country $600 million in energy costs each year. It would also reduce greenhouse gases by the same amount as taking 800,000 cars off the road, the Web site said. What inspires or excites you? Saving the environment. |
