These Yuta Onoda Commissions are Vivid and Nostalgic
Japanese-born, Toronto-based artist Yuta Onoda’s work incorporates both Western and Japanese influences while keeping a style all its own. The illustrations are vividly composed of crisp lines and well-defined colors. This clarity in combination with the scenes and subjects Onada depicts evoke a palpable nostalgia.
Most of the illustrations featured here are commissioned. The artists work for a Response magazine cover is particularly interesting. It is reminiscent of an old National Geographic magazine; this is not to say that it is derivative. Rather the artwork is steeped in the collective memories of popular culture. The vividness of the illustration reminds the viewer of these memories thereby creating personal connection. One is reminded of browsing through the illustrations of elementary school textbooks.
