YouTube Celebrities - a new genre of stars?
A show of hands, please.
How many of you have ever dreamt of going to bed one night, and waking up famous the next morning?
Well, that’s exactly what’s been happening to several lucky people over these last few years. Thanks to video sharing sites like YouTube and Vimeo, fame has never been as instantaneous as it is today.
Take Winnipeg’s Maria Aragon, for instance.
Earlier this year she was just an unknown 10 year-old girl. But in February all of that changed. Her cover of Lady GaGa’s “Born This Way” become a viral sensation and she joined the ranks of the YouTube celebrities.
GaGa herself tweeted about how touched she was by the cover, and Aragon has been on the whirlwind road to fame ever since. Aragon made her rounds on TV’s top talkshows, most notably on the Ellen show. This summer, she recorded an album in the Philippines and just recently shot a Holiday commercial for The Gap.
And Aragon is just one of the latest in a growing number of YouTube celebrities.
There are also big bucks to be made. The International Business Times reported that YouTube drew in more than $1.6 billion in ad revenue this year.
In fact, some YouTube celebrities not only make a very good living from their videos, but many are turning pro. That’s right, many YouTube celebrities like Aragon have entered the mainstream entertainment domain.
Expect to see more YouTube celebrities on the silver and small screens sometime soon.
