Just as having lots of women in a nightclub makes a particular bar more attractive to men, so too with video games. If men know that women are playing a certain video game, (especially online) then that particular game holds a stronger lure.
Video game developers are tapping into this notion by creating adult-oriented video games especially of interest to women. They know that if the women are playing, the men will be quick to follow and that totally opens up the market.
Case in point: Lapis - a game where the ladies take a cute blue character to her “happy place” as they navigate through a “magical pet adventure”.
They might not think of it this way, but the designers of adult-oriented video games are a little bit like nightclub owners: they are always trying to figure out how to attract women as the ultimate lure for larger groups of male customers.
Lapis, the blue-hued main character of a prototype video game by Heather Kelley, a designer with Ubisoft, wants to help women take a "magical pet adventure'' to their "happy place.'' Her game, downloadable for free at http://www.moboid.com/lapis/index.htm, offers "a stealthy primer'' on female sexuality, and is meant primarily as a conversation piece to stimulate debate around the prevalence of sex in video games today, she said.
