Smart computer users everywhere are sticking it to the man by taking advantage of a LEGAL loophole in Windows Vista which allows users to continue using the popular new operating system free for 1 year.  What Microsoft is calling a “hack” is actually, as Windows expert Brian Livingston says, a deliberate switch that Microsoft put in the operating system.  All one has to do is change one number in the system registry - could this be any easier?

Whether you support the tyrany of the world’s biggest computer company or whether you are willing to exploit whatever holes will save you having to alleyoop $400 into Bill Gates’ pocket, the future of operating systems (especially if Google has its way) is going the way of the MP3, straight into the public domain.

Livingston last month revealed that a one-line command lets users postpone Vista activation up to three times. Combined with Vista's initial 30-day grace period, that meant users could run Vista for as long as 120 days before they had to activate the OS. At the time, Microsoft seemed unconcerned with the disclosure, and flatly stated that using it would not violate the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). (pcworld)
